^blank blank^blank black^ ... the background is set to black, and firefox is set to open to a blank page, and indeed after the big flash it goes to a complete black page.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Maybe swap the "default" text and background colors here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Content

Click the Colors button and you will see buttons that let you choose from a palette. Experiment. The only thing you can do wrong is to OK this little form with identical or highly similar colors for both text and background. That can be annoyingly difficult to recover from.

nope, didn't help

Could I suggest emailing Stefano, the author of the FT DeepDark theme, to see whether he has any suggestions on this: [email protected]

BTW opening while holding down the shift (safe ode) also makes the flash. I apologize that post didn't show up in my email, so I missed it earlier.

Stefano hasn't replied yet.

The problem also occurs when opening a new tab in a new window (shift-new-tab) .

I think I understand what is happening. The initial launch window created by MS Windows is white. As soon as the Firefox process gets a hold it it, it applies the default background setting (black). Hence the flash.

I will update this machine to Windows 10 (from 8) and apply a dark theme, I bet that will make the flash go away ...

This is a problem even when not using a "dark" theme. I'll be on a website that has a non-white background, open a tab to another, but in between this blinding white flash...

Very bad when working at night. I'm using the f.lux addon to selectively darken and remove blue, and its very nice. But the blinding white flash just ruins my adapted eyesight.

Why can't "about:blank" be programmed to be a neutral grey ?

Hi VerizonSucks, do you mean programmed as part of Firefox? As a regular poster here, you know that in support we work with the Firefox we have today and that you can submit feature suggestions for future versions of Firefox on the following site:

Add code to the userContent.css file.

/* about:blank */
@-moz-document url(about:blank){html,body{background-color:#ccc!important}}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
