pages take minutes to load "waiting for..."
Firefox 15 opens fast. But the BBC News and other sites take ages to appear after typing the URL.
A series of "waiting for........" messages appear.
The site the waiting for... box lists seem to go on forever and seem to be tracking or advert servers etc.Can this be bypassed?

There are some add-ons that might solve some of that. I experienced similar issues until I installed AdBlock Plus and Ghostery.
- AdBlock Plus --> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
- NOTE: After installing ABP, you must subscribe a a list (only one or two) and be sure that it is updated; lists will auto-update
- Getting started --> http://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started
- Subscription lists --> http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions (I use Easy List and Malware Domains)
- Ghostery --> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ghostery/
- It auto installs a list of sites to block and auto-updates, if the auto-update is selected/checked in Add-ons > Extensions > Ghostery > Options"
You may need to remove some "tracking" cookies as well. Many anti-virus products recognize and clear those for you.

Not related to your question, but...
You may need to update some plug-ins. Check your plug-ins and update as necessary:
- Plug-in check --> http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
- Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in: Installing (or Updating) the Shockwave plugin with Firefox
- Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape: Installing/Updating Adobe Reader in Firefox
- Shockwave Flash (Adobe Flash or Flash): Updating Flash in Firefox
- Next Generation Java Plug-in for Mozilla browsers: Installing or Updating Java in Firefox

Thanks, I already use Adblock+ and actually wondered if that is what was causing the delay? I can imagine it having to scan the site before the browser loads it and thus delay? Cookies are all cleared by CCleaner regularly and my plugins are up to date.
AdBlock Plus does not scan sites, it just blocks them before they load.
Did you install Ghostery? It will block over 1000 tracking sites.
You might clear the Cache and the Network Cache to see if that helps.
Your Plugins (Add-ons > Plugins) are not up to date. Your version of Shockwave Flash (aka Flash) is out of date. Go to the Plugin Check Page link in my original reply to check the commonly used Plugins.
I am sure that you already know this: CCleaner only cleans/deletes the checked/selected items when Firefox is completely closed. Current version of CCleaner is 3.21.1767.

LOL I checked just before you and updated shockwave and silverlight. But how could you know? Anyway the fact Adblock has to act before the page loads surely means a delay? I'll install Ghostery next.
"LOL I checked just before you and updated shockwave and silverlight. But how could you know?"
Click on "More system details" to the right of your original question, Your Plugins are listed at the bottom.
AdBlock plus intercepts the links on the page before they try to load, no delay.
Did you try installing Ghostery?
I just loaded BBC News World ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/ ) and BBC News UK ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk/ ) and they both load very quickly for me.

Hmm, amazing. Seems almost instant. I chose sites I'd not used today so they wouldn't be in the cache etc as I'd cleared it earlier. I setup CCleaner to clear a huge range of cookies as well as cache etc and also used FFs own clear cache options.
EDIT: Yes, I see now that you have chosen a solution.
