I receive regular email posts from a particular site. It directs me to go to their website to read the article they are telling me about. I click on the link and it opens a new tab. After several minutes it times out. It tells me in the lower left hand corner that it is waiting for the website or it tells me it is waiting for a TLS handshake. The URL line says: about:blank. It never gets to the point of displaying that website's URL. This is the ONLY website that does this. I have cleared cache and deleted the cookies for that site. The result is the same. Why is this happening and what can I do about it?

Hi rbradsh2,

Is this issue with that one website which times out happening on any other web browsers ( Chrome / Edge ) ?

Here is a related thread for TLS Handshake : Why do I get TLS Handshake and not connect to the web bage I'm trying to connect to? {link}

After reading the response I find that I inadvertently left out some info that may be necessary.

I am on a Mac, OS 10.14.6. I also tried Safari and received a partial URL of: el2.convertkit-mail.com but still did not connect to the website.

I'm located on a sailboat in a marina outside of the u.s. and sometimes use a VPN. Using that or not makes no difference in this case. I connect to the Internet via a modem utilizing the local Telcel phone towers (they may still be 3G). Until recently I was having no problems.

I just found another website that refused to load (Firefox) saying that it was not secure and NOT giving me an opportunity to "opt in" for that website.

Thanks rbrash2,

From what I read, if the date and time is incorrect, Firefox might consider the certificate required as outdated. You try and turn off Set time zone automatically using current locations to see if that makes a difference.

To update the time settings.

  1. From the Apple Menu, open System Preferences...
  2. Click Date & Time and uncheck Set time zone automatically using current location
  3. Toggle this option on again to see if that made a difference.
  • You could also try resetting your modem if you haven't already.
  • You could try to temporarily disable any Antivirus running

I hope this helps
