Hello

jojo23.

Read this :

1. Press Windows + R and type: cmd.

2. Type: chkdsk E: /f and hit Enter. (Replace E: with the drive letter of your device where you lost or deleted files.)

3. Type: Y and hit Enter.

4. Type E: again and hit Enter. (Replace E: with the drive letter of your device where you lost or deleted files.)

5. Type: attrib -h -r -s /s /d *.* and hit Enter. Wait for the command prompt to execute the code. When it finishes, you will see the command prompt is ready to receive new command again.

After that, check your flash drive. It will contain 3 or 4 files and 1 folder or only 1 folder with no name.

Delete all the files except for the folder. It contains all your missing files.

Reorganize your files or rename the folder.

I had an Avast anti-virus crash.

Not sure what that means and why it possibly triggered the installation of Bitdefender.

I installed another Bit Defender,

Not sure what 'another' means here. Just make sure there's only one anti-virus software running, i.e. Bitdefender shouldn't be running in addition to Avast.

which found trojans and removed them.

Then I'm wondering why Avast didn't find these. I can only guess those supposedly 'trojans' were found in Thunderbird mail folders? If so, there was absolutely no need to remove those 'trojans', as they couldn't do any harm. What most likely happened instead, Bitdefender did corrupt Thunderbird mail files, and hence caused data loss.

Whether there is something left to recover I don't know. The safe way would be to restore missing data from a backup of your Thunderbird profile you created prior to the incident.

These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software in the future.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

Delete all the files except for the folder. It contains all your missing files.

I somehow doubt that will be the case.

Hello there Jojo23. -

It seems that one of the antivirus scanners got stuck.

By reporting that there is an error with the program itself it is trying to resolve it and whether it is getting solved or its getting worse.

To what our cliënt jojo23 report s us.
