Is there a way to stop anything from changing my about:config settings?

Today firefox went haywire, something to do with the Windows keyboards shortcuts,as it was interpreting everything I attempted to type as a shortcut of some kind,so I factory set it which fixed that problem, but something altered the about:config windows settings, which raised merry-hell with it continually opening new windows for every link, until I found out what was going on and reset them,as something had set the about:windows settings to -3 or so. Is there a way to stop those settings being changed without my express permission,as I'd really prefer not having to fiddle with those settings,if at all possible, and the link on which I found the info on how to correct the problem was over 2 years old?

It is possible that some of the status keys had the wrong state and Firefox sees them as still pressed.

If it happens again try to press all the status keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) a few times to see if that helps to recover from this. If it doesn't help then close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer.
