can't select where downloads save

No matter where I set my downloads to save or if I set it to ask for each download, files are automatically saved to a "temp" file buried in other files. The settings will show what was selected but that does not affect where the downloads are saved.

me09 What version of Firefox are you currently using? If you are using v 42.0 you can set your downloads to save to a specific folder, ie. "C:\User\Downloads" . If this does not work try setting your browser to always prompt where to save files.

Thank you for answering, unfortunately it doesn't solve my problem. I'm using v41.0 I think. I have tried changing both of those options, to ask each time or to save to a specific folder and despite changing those settings it still saves to a specific "temp" file. If I go back to the settings/options it will show what I selected but that does not seem to make a difference.

It is possible that security (Anti-Virus, firewall) is causing problems. Try to disable security software temporarily to see if that makes a difference.

Firefox immediately starts downloading the file in the background and saves the file to the temp folder and doesn't wait until you specify the name and the location (destination folder). If the file stays in the temp folder then it is possible that your security software is blocking the file and prevents Firefox from moving the file to the specified destination folder.

Along the lines of cor-el's response, sometimes different Windows user permissions are required for the final download destination vs. the temp folder. If you are trying to save the file outside your regular Windows profile folders (e.g., not under your regular Downloads or Documents folder), there might be a permissions issue.
