My New Tab location is overwritten every time I restart my computer. If I set it to the search engine I want and then restart the browser, the new tab opens correctly. However, every time the computer restarts and I open the browser, it sets to a search conduit site.

I am assuming something is overwriting the about.config file when my computer restarts. Is there a way to prevent this.

if your manual changes don't 'stick' after a restart of the browser, please look out for any suspicious extensions (like 3rd-party-toolbars or things you have not installed intentionally) presently installed under the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions or the programs section of the windows control panel and remove those entries.

in case this doesn't solve the issue please try this: go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information > profile folder - "show folder", then a new window will open up. in this window look out for a file named user.js (it might be used to overwrite your custom settings). in case it is present , delete or rename this file and restart firefox afterwards.

Bookmark and use this; Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
