Hi,

I am using firefox in my linux machine. I have observed that it is occupying 700 MB of memory whenever I open it. I want to minimize this memory consumption, as I have a small application, that might open up 50 or more browser instance at (almost) the same time. When I tried to achieve this, my virtual memory and cpu memory usage are growing tremendously.
Are there any ways to achieve this optimization in Linux? Because, I have observed that opening the many such instances in windows is not causing any issues.

Thanks and Regards, Sai Kumar.

Hi Nellus,

Thanks for the reply. I have tried to use some of the techniques, but I am still seeing that each Firefox instance is taking 500 MB to and is constantly using around 450-500 MB of Virtual memory.
I have observed in Windows Environment that not every firefox instance consumes individually that much amount of virtual memory. Is there something that I am missing here? Is there any other way to reduce the virtual memory usage from 500 MB to around 150 MB or so...?

Thanks and Regards, Sai Kumar

Can't you open those "instances" as Tabs rather than separate browser windows?

Also, I see that you are using Firefox 15.0.1 on Windows, is your Linux version that old, too? The Mozilla developers are constantly working toward minimizing the memory needs for Firefox, you may be missing the latest "fixes" if you aren't using the latest version - Firefox 24.0 .

Hi @the-edmeister,

I cannot open the instances as tabs, as my requirement IS to open new instances. Yes, i do know that my version of firefox is not 24, the latest version. I have been seeing so many changes (almost every month). So, in order to stabilize my application, I am using Firefox 10 in my linux machine. However, i even tried with the latest 23 rd version in another machine, and I am still seeing this huge usage of memory (In LINUX).

Thanks and Regards, Sai Kumar.

Hi @Nellus91,

Thanks for the useful posts. I have already tried using that Minimize Memory Usage configuration. I have observed that It will minimize the usage of memory only until we keep the browser idle. once we start using it, the memory is back to normal.
I am thinking of not to preferring any add-ons, as it might slow the opening time of my firefox instances. Any other solution will be of great help.

Thanks and Regards, Sai Kumar.
