FireFox 6 updated on its own without asking. Why even bother to ask me the first time if you're going to ignore my preferences?

FireFox 6 asked me multiple times to update but I always clicked "Ask Later" because I didn't want to lose certain add-ons that aren't yet supported in the new version. Today it went ahead and updated on its own without asking. Why even bother to ask me the first time if you're going to ignore my preferences? I don't like it when software thinks it knows better than I do what I want!

Firefox is going to "Ask" every time you open it, delay too long in answering the "Ask Later" or miss that "prompt" altogether, and it will automatically download the update.

I appreciate the response but the original question still remains. The update mechanism in place gives the impression that you can control/delay the update process while the reality is that Firefox is actually going to make that decision for you anyway. Why not make the reality match the impression rather than the opposite? What is the logic behind tricking me into thinking I have a choice in making the update?

I had this happen to me and it upgraded and now Firefox won't start even in safe mode. grrrr

tpallred,

Just change the way Firefox updates. Go into Firefox - Options - Advanced panel - Update tab. Clear the check boxes for "Automatically check for updates to:" anything that you don't want to automatically update. Remember to manually as soon as you can.

When I looked at that tab it was set up to automatically download updates, which it did for version 6.0.1 without asking. That is a new behavior and must mean that when 6.0 updated it automatically changed that setting from the previous setting to just "Check for updates". I wondered why 6.0.1 got installed without any prior warning. Mozilla is becoming more like Micro$oft in that they think what they want must be better for me than what I think I want.
