Firefox 6.6.12 on laptop using XP. After recovering from a crash (closed the PC with FF open), FF now crashes when I select private browsing.

Another thing: when I clock on Bookmarks>Bookmark this page nothing happens. The usual window offering where to store the URL does not appear.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Thanks. It was indeed an add-on causing the problem. Problem solved!

I nailed it down to the McAfee SiteAdvisor plugin. Although it never caused any problems before with FF, a quick uninstall/reinstall (of SA, not FF) fixed it.

Thanks. This resolved the issue. McAfee Site Adviser is an extension (v. plugin). I simply disabled it and private browsing mode worked just fine.

Incidentally, I'm running under Windows 7 Pro (v. XP) but the problem described was the same.

Thanks again.

pjfarr, you are my hero !!!

I was having a couple different probs w/ FF 3.6.12, and the Private Browsing issue was just the latest.

After disabling McAfee Site Advisor I was able to start Private Browsing, and none of the other issues have recurred yet... and it has been long enough that surely one thing or another would have happened by now.

I sure am glad I searched this particular prob, and also that YOU had found the solution... perhaps MSA is the root of multiple probs.

Kudos to you.
