New version added a toolbar icon for Extensions that can't be moved, removed, or hidden.

Firefox applied an update and now there is a puzzle piece icon on my toolbar for extensions at the top right. I have tried to edit my toolbar but that icon can't be moved, removed, or hidden and it's where my bookmarks icon usually is which is messing with my work flow a lot. I work very fast and have years of muscle memory of clicking the first icon at the top right to open bookmarks and now I keep opening extensions.

Hi kodack, this morning my Outlook 365's bottom left horizontal toolbar moved to a top left vertical toolbar, which was immediately a visual hazard that made the program harder to use. So I totally sympathize with wanting to be able to move a toolbar button to a more suitable place.

Being able to move the button may be important to others as well. You can give kudos to the following new idea on Mozilla Connect to hopefully get it more attention:

https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/make-the-extensions-button-on-firefox-nightly-110-0a1-movable-in/idi-p/21506

I posted a reply with a link to this thread, but it won't appear until a moderator approves it.

More Generally

There is a preference to hide the button temporarily (returning overflowing add-ons to the regular overflow menu), but as with many transitional preferences, that will eventually be removed. Related thread: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1402534

The reason I think the button will inevitably return (and remain non-removable) is that starting this year, more and more add-ons will be changing to a new permission model where they won't be active on a site until you grant permission (Manifest v3). The drop-down list from the Extensions button will be your one-stop shop for managing add-on permissions.

At this point, I don't think Mozilla is considering an alternative to having an Extensions button/drop-down so that it could be removable, but you could start a new thread over on Mozilla Connect with a proposal for an alternative. For example, maybe it could be moved to the main menu? Or the tab context menu? I don't have enough experience using the button to know how feasible it would be to relocate its features. In fact, we end users are all new to the Manifest v3 world and will need more experience to fully understand the best way(s) forward.

Here's another Mozilla Connect "idea" to vote for:

They seem to be popping up quickly right now. ;-)

There are also some bugs about customizing this button.

  • 1795235 - Extensions menu can't be customized
  • 1800883 - Consider hiding "some" extensions in the unified extensions panel
  • 1805924 - Allow to re-order the list of extensions in the unified extensions panel

(please do not comment in bug reports
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html
)

If I use a profile that doesn't have extensions installed then clicking the Extensions button brings me directly to the about:addons page (i.e. I get a tab switch), so in this case is it useful to be able to remove this button.

What about Last Pass? It's totally useless unless I can add it to the toolbar.

If it appears on the Extensions button drop-down, right-click it and choose Pin to Toolbar to add the button to the bar.

Firefox 113 will allow moving the button from its current (locked position) anywhere along the bar to the left (similar to moving the Back and Forward buttons). However, Firefox 113 still will not allow complete removal or moving into the overflow list.
