I will be to-the-point: Firefox 109.0 has forced the "extensions" icon (a puzzle piece) on my Bookmarks toolbar.

(1) I do not wish for it to appear there (2) I am not given the possibility to remove it from the "Customise toolbar" screen

Please assist.

I don't think that is something the user can remove by default unless your using 3rd party apps to change that. If that options doesn't exist in customize toolbar Firefox then you can't do what your asking. What is it that it being there is a problem for you?

I always like my toolbar to be clean, and this icon bothers me. In the same way that you can elect to hide the "Downloads" icon, being able to hide whatever bothers you should be made possible.

I was just looking at that in Nightly yesterday and thinking the same thing!  ;-))

You can set this pref to false on the about:config page to remove/hide this new Extensions button in Firefox 109+.

  • about:config => extensions.unifiedExtensions.enabled = false.

Close and restart Firefox after modifying the setting to make changes effective and hide this button.

Humble request: Don't implement such options without providing users the ability to disable them without having to resort to an about:config command.

100% counter-intuitive.

more options

The reason it is not so easy to disable is that by disabling it you may break add-ons that you have installed in Firefox.

You may not see that breakage now, but as add-ons get updated to "manifest version three" they will need that about:config preference turned on to be able to work.

Perhaps I should not have used the word "disable" but instead "hide" (with reference to visually-polluting things).

Mozilla is gathering feedback on being able to move/remove the button over on Mozilla Connect -- vote now (click the "thumbs up" button) before this temporary about:config preference gets removed and it's too late:

Recent history has shown that mandating something usually doesn't go over very well. I'm not a fan of connect... still waiting for my comment to be approved. ;-/

I'm using code in userChrome.css to reorder the items on the Navigation Toolbar and modified it to place the Extension button to the left end as well (actually my code made it already move to the far left). It seems to behave fine in that position unlike the "3-bar" Firefox menu button that needs special JS code in autoconfig.cfg to make the drop down list open to the right.

#PanelUI-button               {-moz-box-ordinal-group:1}
#unified-extensions-button    {-moz-box-ordinal-group:2}
#nav-bar-overflow-button      {-moz-box-ordinal-group:3}
#nav-bar-customization-target {-moz-box-ordinal-group:4}

Firefox updated to 111.0 today and the problem is back. The solution user "cor-el" initially provided on 17 Jan 2023 no longer works. Do Mozilla even take user feedback into consideration?

Hi

Thank you for your question. The Unified Extension Button is not designed to be removed in Firefox as part of support for an improved add-on standard. The preference that you are looking for was removed as part of the update to Firefox 111.

Very bad decision, in my opinion. Just bear in mind that not allowing your users to disable what they consider eyesores never goes well.

Hi,

The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or developers. If you want to leave feedback for developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select either Share ideas and feedback… or Submit feedback…, depending on your Firefox version. Alternatively, you can use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.

You can also file a bug report or feature request. See File a bug report or feature request for Mozilla products for details.
