Yesterday I installed bt.com/virus-protect, which is McAfee. It asked to install an add on to Thunderbird, since which Thunderbird keeps crashing when I open, download or write messages and when it does work is very slow. Should I remove the add on and if so, how do I do it please? Or is there any other solution?

Thank you for your reply. I've been using Thunderbird for many years and I suspect I don't have the latest version. The three bar icon isn't there but the full menu is there. I tried using the Add Ons option, which only offered me the option to disable the McAfee one, not to delete it. I tried that, rebooted but it made no difference. And as McAfee was slowing all my other programmes down too, though not as disastrously as it was Thunderbird, I just uninstalled the lot. It had got in everywhere! Thank you so much for your advice and information. I've learned something new, which is always useful!

McAfee has always had various issues with being compatible. Uninstall the McAfee addon as it has no use in Thunderbird. It is advisable to not let McAfee anywhere near any Thunderbird folders and files as it could make a mess of them. It will slow down Thunderbird - performance wise. btw: Thunderbird does not allow remote content to be displayed unless you specify it. Attachments do not open unless you select them.

Please read these release notes: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/52.0.1/releasenotes/

Crash due to incompatibility with McAfee Anti-SPAM add-on. Add-on is blocked in 52.0.1

It is not the job of Thunderbird to work with AV programs. It is the AV program developers who should make it work with other programs.

How to remove an addon: 'Menu icon' > 'Addons' This opens in a new tab. Locate the 'McAfee addon and select to 'Remove' at the prompt restart Thunderbird.

Many thanks Toad Hall. I am thinking of uninstalling the whole McAfee programme. Will that automatically remove the Add On too? However re: ADDONS, if I remove that first which is the Menu icon please? I can see nothing on the Thunderbird screen so marked. Not sure I'm seeing the whole list on the left hand side of the screen at the moment though. Top seems to be hidden. Is it there?

The 'Menu icon' has 3 horizontal lines. By default is located on the right side on the 'Mail Toolbar' near global search.

I dragged mine over to the far left as it seemed more logical. I also prefer to use the 'Menu Bar' toolbar as it is quicker to get to Options and other tools. The image below shows that 'Menu icon' outlined in red. It also shows the 'Addons' link just above 'Options'. 'Options' also shows you how to select and enable all/any of the toolbars.

eg: File, Edit, View etc is on the 'Menu Bar' toolbar.
