My password manager stopped working about a month ago after working for many years. I still have usernames/passwords stored, but when going to secured site, nothing gets filled in. And new sites do not trigger "save this password" message.

Windows 7, Firefox 46.0.1. Since my Trend antivirus expired, I did install a trial version of the same to hold me over until I got new AV software - and that happened about a month ago. Trend was consistently displaying popups asking if I wanted to use their password manager. I said no, but meanwhile, Firefox hasn't been working.

I uninstalled Trend yesterday and installed McAfee. The password problem persists. Is there a switch someone that turns the password save/display ability on and off?

hi sfz005, could you look in your list of programs in the system control panel if a separate trend micro password manager entry is still installed there and if so remove it?

Trend did have a separate password manager program. But I removed it when I removed the antivirus program.

I was thinking it might be a Firefox flag someplace in the "about: " pages. I'd probably need a hint from somebody there. Lots of stuff to mess you up.

I can probably fix it be reinstalling Firefox. Kinda hate doing that, you know? There is a lot of re-configuration to get it right again. Although that probably wouldn't hurt. Lots of bookmarks, etc. Might help to streamline bookmarks, add-ons, everything.

Reinstalling Firefox won't affect any preferences, bookmarks, or add-ons you have / had installed in Firefox.

More to the point, does Firefox even have your Passwords? If you were using a Passwords Manager feature that was part of Trend, your Passwords may have been saved in Trend and may now be gone or uninstalling Trend made it so you don't have access to them any longer,

Open up Options > Security - > Logins --> Saved Logins

Are any of your "logins" listed there, or is it empty?

Is the Firefox Password Manager enabled?

  • Tools > Options > Security: Logins: "Remember logins for sites"

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

Thanks for the help. An unchecked enable box. Who knows if I did it... or if maybe was tweaked when I installed the Trend trial version. I am usually pretty careful, but stranger things have happened.

Thanks!
