T-bird very slow, freezes frequently. Cause: McAfee real time scanning
Earlier today T-bird was receiving ok but would not send (I could send without a problem from my webmail and from my phone, so I know the problem was with T-bird or with it's interface with my server, but not with the server itself). I restarted my computer a couple of times and downloaded all the updates my system suggested, and was able to send emails from T-bird, although only after repeated attempts. But T-bird now works very slowly and keeps freezing, with or without "not responding" message. I'm trying to delete backlog messages to see if this is the problem, but even that is slow. Any suggestions? Is there an upgrade I missed or something? Thanks. MaxineKL

It's McAfee, but I was long ago advised to turn off "real time scanning" so it wouldn't interfere with T-bird. I was going to say that I haven't changed anything with McAfee, but then I recalled that I had responded to a "warning" from my computer that it wasn't properly being protected.... I just now took a look at McAfee and saw that real time scanning was back on. I've turned it off, and it seems to have fixed it. Many thanks for the memory jog!!
Turning off real-time scanning completely is a bad idea, you'd be pretty much unprotected then. See this article for instructions on McAfee. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee
I'll have a look. I've had the real-time scanning off for about a year with no virus problems, but it makes sense to have a less "blanket" solution, I guess. Thanks again.
Hi again, I turned real time scanning back on and then did the first two steps you suggested. McAfee wouldn't let me do #3, saying the program was too important to exclude from scan. I contacted my server tech help, and they weren't able to find a way to do this either. Maybe it's a different version of McAfee than the one described on the Mozilla help page you sent me the link to.
Please contact McAfee support if you're having difficulties to follow the instructions.
Was this Thunderbird version 31, or 38?
