I have no memory problems (16GB for my netbook), and still I realized Firefox was too slow, checking hard-drive very often. It would be very nice Firefox could adapt its attitude, according with the memory of the machine. Because of this I switched to Chrome and it's really faster! Though I'd rather prefer to use, for several reasons, Firefox.

It could be nice if we had an option to define how far could Firefox go, in memory consumption.

Thank you in advance

Also, go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for speed, memory, fast.

I had already checked that page and it does not solve my problem. I already have very few extras, I will not delete my cookies and I'd like something memory related, and the majority of those speeding apps. don't deal with memory. Chrome, for machines with no memory problems, is much faster. Nevertheless I really would like to use Firefox.

Btw, is there anything I can do here? about:memory

Being a 32 bit application, it can only address 3 or 4GB of RAM. Firefox does "adapt" but only that far.

So there might be the answer why Chrome in my machine is really much faster. I have a "low" CPU as it is a netbook, though I have 16GB memory.

From what I have recently read, Chrome just released their 64-bit version for Windows. Mozilla is a little behind the curve at this point with not having a Windows 64-bit version of Firefox ready yet, but hopefully by the end of the year they will.

Can you kindly tell me how the 32/64-bit issue affect memory usage? The ratio for memory usage is the double? Can we not simply say Firefox to use memory at ease up to a certain high limit for my case?

Thank you

I'll be waiting then their 64 bit version!

32-bit programs can only use 2GB by nature. The fact that Firefox is able to use up to 4GB takes some clever programming. In short, memory is limited by 32-bit because it simply can't use more.
