I am getting pop-ups on my MacBook. It doesn't happen in Safari and my Firefox is updated. How do I fix?

I called Apple tech support (paid the fee) and they said it was clearly an issue with Firefox. How do I get rid of this virus? I definitely don't want to use a third party software like MacBook Keeper or Norton as they are not recommended for Apple products.

I really don't want to stop using Firefox.

Are these just the occasional ad here and there or something more persistent?

For occasional popups that bypass Firefox's filter, you can try an add-on such as Adblock Plus which has a companion add-on specific to popups.

For persistent popups, these might be caused by one of your add-ons. Could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled (Flash and other plugins still run)

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?
