Why does Firefox keep 'asking' when I've checked the 'don't ask me again' box?

When attempting to open media such as something from an email, Firefox always shows me the window asking me to verify what software program to use when opening the file even though I have checked what to use and the 'don't ask me again' box. I've also checked the 'always use this program' box. It's very annoying.

This happens because the file you are downloading is an attachment, thus Firefox will always ask you what you want to do with the file.

This is a security feature, since e-mail attachments can often contain harmful files. Thus, there is no way to automatically open an e-mail attachment without asking you first. This checkbox can be confusing when it appears on an attachment download, since the setting doesn't apply to attachments.

I have the opposite problem. When I want to just 'open' an attachment, it tries to make me 'save' it altho I don't want to. This happened once before but I have forgotten how to fix it up in menu
