Thunderbird freezes constantly on my iMac running Mojave 10.14.6
Since before the last update to Thunderbird, it constantly freezes and locks up my whole computer to the point where I have to shut my iMac down with the start button. It has actually gotten worse since the most recent update. I have used Thundirbird for over 10 years and never had a problem with it until now. It also will spontaneously close an email while I am trying to read it. This is very annoying and if this keeps up and I can't find a solution I will change my email program.

Sounds like Thunderbird (or something) is grabbing lots of memory.
If you have no addons, I suggest a starting point is install version 91 from https://getthunderbird.com/ If there is still a problem then we can investigate further.
Backup your profile data before updating.
I'm on a iMac and it says my Thunderbird is up to date with 78.14.0
Hello there larrysphotos. We have read your message. We try to help you.
Oké did you reinstall your Thunderbird software? This is the software you already had on your pc. Oké I do see they sending you a beta version of the latest Thunderbird versions. I will give you a recent full install installation. Try to hook up with this and install it if you can. If you need this.

About the addon
The add-ons from your Thunderbird program. How many of them are on the screen? Turning them on and off for a while gives this some sort of solution that solved something?
Try to use the safe modus for Thunderbird. Turn of the Addons and extensions that can slow down your software. In the worst case your there is that your iMac perhaps has more than one symphton. That comes together and gets a error sort of sympthone. It getting slower or getting something else that looks like this. Clean your system once in the while is also nesssary.
To much on your ssd.
To slow by inserted ram.
And other subject s that looks like this.
A firewall or Antivirus program. Try to turn Of your addons etc startup in safe mode and check if the addons is one of the causses so yes delete them. And reinstall the good ones. Do the same by the security programs. Check your ssd and other discs if they are accessible. Might be a cable that s not probably placed well into your modem.
If this not disappears after this steps. There might be something else?

That's fine. What I'm saying is download and install from https://getthunderbird.com/ after you | backup your profile
larrysphotos
did you have better results with version 91?
As I said I can't install version 91 on my iMac. It says my Thunderbird is up to date with 78.14.0.

The only way that should happen is if you are running something older than macOS 10.9.
Sorry to inform you, but it says, "Thunderbird is up to date". with 78.14.0

hmm
1. download a file using the "free download" button at https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/ 2. that's version 91 3. install the file you downloaded
I was never notified that you have to manually download version 91 because it doesn't update from version 78. OK, so I have downloaded and installed version 91 but how do I get my settings and all my emails into version 91? I've copied everything in my Thunderbird folder to my Thunderbird 2 folder but it still acts like Thunderbird 2 (version 91) is a completely new install and wants me to start from scratch entering email addresses and such. I've tried searching on the Internet on how to transfer settings and data and can't find clear directions on how to do it. Everything says to go to "help" then "troubleshooting" and find my profile. Problem is, I've done everything like they say but Thunderbird 2 (version 91) is still acting like it's a new install. So now what do I do?
Forgot to mention, I use POP3 for my email not IMAP. So I have all my emails saved in Thunderbird on my desktop computer.
