When Thunderbird (ver 68.9.0) notifies me that I have a new email from Twitter I can load the actual email as expected. However, the email will contain a link to the specific twitter message and when I click on that link (which should redirect me to twitter) I receive an error message that says "this file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action".

If I access my email (a gmail account) directly through google mail on chrome I get redirected to twitter without running into the problem.This problem only started in the last week or two. I don't recall when I updated to the latest version of Thunderbird but I did update windows (windows 10 pro) to ver 2004 in the last 10 days.

Any suggestions?

I think the problem is Windows has lost track of the default browser, which is what TB applies when you click a link in a message. This often happens after a major W10 update, so I suggest you open W10 Settings, Apps, Default apps, and reset the default Web browser. Also, open your browser and set it as the default through its options.

Chrome was and remains the default web browser. Nevertheless I opened the default apps and set chrome as the default browser again. I also opened chrome and set it as the default browser. Neither of these steps made any difference as the problem still remains.

In case a setting got switched in TB, open Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Config. editor, type network.protocol in the search, and make sure all the preferences are default, i.e. not bold type. Double-click any preference to toggle the value.

You can also try setting the default browser to another app, such as Edge, restarting the computer, then setting it back to Chrome.

I tried both of those steps and the problem still remains. Given the lack of posts by other members of the community it looks like this may be a problem that is affecting only me. Assuming that's the case an easy workaround for me is to go directly to twitter rather than rely on being redirected by Thunderbird. I'm not a heavy twitter user so it's not really that much of an inconvenience. Thanks for your attempts to help.

Do links in other messages, not from twitter, open in Chrome when clicked? If only twitter links show this problem, I would look at the message source (Ctrl+U) to see if the link is in some non-standard format, e.g. if the URL begins with www. instead of https://www. clicking the link won't launch the browser. Webmail and mobile mail apps, which are probably used by the vast majority of twitter users, are less strict about html formatting.

Other links seem to work fine and I didn't mention it before but I have this problem on both my Dell laptop and my HP desktop. These two computers are not networked and both run on windows 10 pro version 2004.

I couldn't see any non-standard formats and the links to twitter appeared to start with https. I must say, however, that I'm getting out of my level of comfort when I'm asked to look for this type of information.
