With latest update July 2018, "Subject" column is missing on inbox display and is not offered or shown as a choice on the toolbox customizer at all. This is true for all folders in the program. The customization list now goes THREAD READ ATTACHMENTS STATUS FROM, and SUBJECT needs to be in there.

I have it, so I suggest you start by trying Thunderbird safe mode and see if that helps.

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

No change, unfortunately. SUBJECT still does not show up on any customization list in any folder. How do I get out of safe mode? One of my add-ons is an export tool, I can at least salvage some files if things go south. Thanks.

Never mind, I figured out how to get out of it.

what happens if you select the reset to default on the customize menu?

Very interesting! The subject column now shows up with the messages, but still isn't shown as a selection in the customization box. At least I get the subjects back, so I'll take it. Thank you for the suggestion.
