How do I remove e-mail account folders from the left panel?

I am running Windows 7 with Thunderbird 38.5.1. All of my e-mail accounts were created under much earlier versions of Thunderbird. Now when I added a new account named "EC Mercury", the creation process makes an EC Mercury directory under the Inbox, and one in the root level of the folder menu in the left panel. None of my other e-mail accounts have done that. I would like to remove those two directories or stop them from being created when accounts are created.

Can anyone tell me how to change this?

I have 15 accounts, all of which are POP3 ... no IMAP.

Yes, I do prefer to have all accounts use the same inbox and folder structure.

It doesn't matter whether I use "View|Folders|All" or "View|Folders|Unified", the folders remain and the problem is the same.

However, you hit the nail on the head with "Account Settings|Server Settings|Advanced". Apparently that is the one thing I did not do with the new account that had already been done with the older accounts, which was to set the inbox to the Local Folders tree. I knew there was something I was missing but it had been so long since I have added a new account that I couldn't remember that step.

You're set to Unified Folders view. What you see is correct and intentional.

I'm guessing that you like your Inboxes collected together. It's possible that your older accounts were set up using POP, and with POP it's possible to set them up to use one communal Inbox. You can't do the same with accounts that use IMAP (and any recently added accounts will be using IMAP by default.) Unified Folders offers an alternative way of collecting messages from multiple accounts into one place, so you have a set of folders such as Inbox, Sent, Trash, Drafts, shown at the top of your listing which represent the assembled contents of the various folders which are common to all of your accounts.

The lower EC Mercury folder is important because it gives you access to any unique folders in that account.

Try the "vanilla" View, View|Folders|All and see if that presentation helps make sense of it all. Then you can go back to View|Folders|Unified if you still prefer that.

Your screen shot doesn't show any "real" email accounts, which is what leads me to think that you have been using POP and its Global Inbox. If you want the new account to work in the same way, you could set it up again but select POP in preference to IMAP. Then under Account Settings|Advanced set the new account to use the Global Inbox.

Note that if you have created any folders under EC Mercury, their contents won't be visible in a POP-connected version of the account, so rescue those while you can see them, and then you can delete the IMAP-connected version of this account.
