I can't access a block of emails in the inbox of one of my email addresses. What has happened?

When I click on emails in the inbox of one of my email addresses, nothing is displayed (or in the case of one of them, a large block of characters is displayed, like this "C+Z3dc7paG+d3jJtavOUpob6ulqppnp").

This only affects emails up until the last few days, which all appear to be OK. I can also send and receive emails to this particular email address.

What may have happened, and what can I do about it?

ok email are on average about 20-80Kb, so that space allocation would indicate no more than 40 or so mails.

Check nortons quarantine for a file called inbox (I think it will probably be there)

Thanks Matt - it's sort of helped - in that the block of emails affected by the problem has now disappeared all together.

The snag is that I often refer to old emails and now these aren't there anymore.

Any ideas what may have caused the problem in the first place?

Check the logs for your anti virus and see if it found a virus about that time in your mail (they really break a lot of stuff getting them)

BTW the repair re-indexes the existing mail folder to create a new mail list. So your mails were already gone from the database. That is unless there is corruption in there. Right click the folder, select properties. What is he size on disk?

Hi Matt, the size on disk is 787k.

My antivirus didn't find a virus about that time, however I suspect I may have picked one up - I am normally OK with bogus emails, but I got one which looked like it was from a known business contact of mine, with a plausible message to look at the contents of a document, and opened the attachment before spotting that the email had not in fact come from the person at all. I ran a quick Scan with Norton after this, but will now try a full system scan.

Hi Matt - thanks for your help again. I ran a full scan with Norton, which identified what I suspected was an email with a virus, and dealt with it, so although it is inconvenient to have lost some emails, problem solved.

I had to respond "didn't answer my problem" because I couldn't see how to respond to you without clicking on that option.

Best wishes

I really hate those buttons in the email. I have requested they be changed because they simply do not offer an obvious route back to this forum and this thread. Whatever you click is fine with me :)
