difference between pop3 and local subfolders?

I have configured a pop3 account for my email. I do not use the "Global Inbox".

I noticed that it is possible to create new subfolders in this account (e.g. subfolders of Inbox), but as far as I know, pop3 does not support subfolders. So it is not clear to me how these subfolders are handled, or in other words, if there is any difference between these subfolders an subfolders created under Local Folders (except for the fact they are stored in different directories).

Thanks for explanation.

Both POP and Local Folders are located on your hard drive. POP folders are associated with your email account. If you remove the POP account it removes all the folders and messages too. Much to the surprise to many users. Remove is pretty self explanatory but some users do not seem to understand the concept. Folders and messages in the Thunderbird special account of Local Folders are not associated with any email account. Local Folders is a default account and cannot be removed. Personally I make folders under Local Folders and sort my "keeper" messages into those folders.
