Running into one problem after another in Windows 7 - now Bookmarks have disappeared, backup folder empty
OK, so auto hide taskbar would stop working, very frustrating since I keep it at the top - so I followed the suggestion on line and "refreshed" FF. That fixed auto hide taskbar, bookmarks still there, but my opening set of tabs (which I keep from session to session) vanished.
So I did a system restore to the most recent point yesterday morning, and this did indeed restore the opening tabs, but now the bookmarks disappeared. Found the profile location and there is nothing in the bookmarks backup folder.
What is going on? Is this my computer or FF? What do I do now?
I do have an old desktop that has most of the bookmarks on it so I can transfer if need be, but I want to know what the heck is going on because it's all very unstable obviously and I need to rely on my browser.
Thanks!

Firefox's Refresh feature is designed to copy your bookmarks to your new profile folder, and places your old profile folder on your desktop inside a folder named Old Firefox Data. Is that folder still there?

Thank you so much for your quick reply! Found the folder and was able to restore finally. I had followed the online instructions and ended up at the new profile.
Couple questions:
Do I need to do anything else to make sure that my history, searches, etc. from Old Profile are imported?
Is there a way to go back to that profile if I wanted to?
Do you have any idea why the AutoHide Taskbar function doesn't work very well?
Thanks again ....
You can copy some of the files from the old profile, overwriting the current files in the new profile.
These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.
These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox
FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

By AutoHide, you mean the built-in behavior of the Windows Taskbar to only show when you hover the mouse at the edge of the screen?
Some other users have run into a problem where Firefox stores an incorrect screen height and the window ends up even taller than the available space or blocking the Taskbar. Since the file that stores these dimensions is difficult to edit, the usual approach is to remove/rename the file. To do that:
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.
Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
- (menu bar) File > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename xulstore.json to something like xulstore.old. If you see a file named localstore.rdf, rename that one to localstore.old.
Start Firefox back up again and windows should be back to a default size.
Regarding your old profile folder, I've listed out my suggested procedure for reverting to it in this post: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1054937#answer-711667
That will set up the current and past profiles in parallel so you can switch between them if needed. There isn't really any easy way to merge them.
