i want to customize how downloads are done. Let me give some background. i get text( .txt )attachments in my email (in OWA) these are named by the system as "text_0.txt" . with these files i would like to click on it and have it automatically download and open the file. yes, i have tried the "do this automatically for files like this" checkbox and had it set to "open" but it still asks me whenever i try to open one. to make this further annoying/complicated, im almost positive this is possible because i chose "automatically save" & "do this automatically for files like this" checkbox and when i selected the attachment firefox immediately downloaded and saved the file. if you can help thanks! if you cannot help please leave a comment just for my sake so that i can see that my post is actually being seen.

Thanks Again!

Firefox doesn't go by the file suffix entirely - .txt in this case, it uses the MIME Type for the file being downloaded.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-firefox-behavior-when-open-file#w_adding-download-actions See the bottom - Is Do this automatically for files like this from now on disabled?

This can happen if the website's server incorrectly specifies the Internet Media type of the file. It also can happen if the server assigns "Content-Disposition: attachment" to the file. Or if you saved an incorrect action for .txt files in the past.

I have never used OWA, but I have had a few web mail services over the years that didn't handle the MIME Type correctly and "Do this automatically from now on." just didn't work. And every time Xfinity Zimbra web mail gets a major re-do or major update, they break it for a few months until enough users complain about it, and they get around to fixing it. It wouldn't surprise a bit if that was the case with OWA - Microsoft has played "fast and loose" with web standards for too many years and tends to do things their own way and "be damned" what the standards are. Just my opinion.

My advice is to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in your Profile folder, with Firefox closed, to reset all your file download actions to default by Firefox creating a new file upon launch.

i am thankful for your help! i tried deleting the .rdf file and it didnt do anything.

i dont know how to check what the server assigns to an attachment.

also, im not arguing with you, just trying to point out, that when i select the "save" option, it saves the document every time without asking for a prompt.

this is what i see when i click on it when it's not set to "save" as you can see, the "do this automatically [blah blah blah]" is not greyed out. but maybe you can see something i cant

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

The "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Window 7+ versions and the "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K are hidden folders.
