Somehow it appears my Fire fox got upgraded as I now see a Orange Firefox tab in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Since that time lots of bad things have happened. I can't access my bookmarks they are gone.. I can use the "back" button to navigate the internet. I know you can hit the menu bar and the orange firefox tab dissapears. I would just like to go back to the old software if that is my problem so I can get my bookmarks back as well as the "back" button. After further review sometimes that orange tab isn't there and everything works fine but most times that orange firefox tab shows up and nothing works as described above. HELP please :)

Chosen solution

That going back is called system restore Mike.

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

I feel a little odd saying this but it's a mozilla support thread and not windows support, so you can try personal messaging for such questions. By the way XP support is shutting down soon, you can consider migrating to Win7 or 8.

As you have noticed, you see either the Firefox menu button or the menu bar with all menu entries.

  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the hidden Menu bar)

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the hidden Menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup

Hello Mike,

Do you remember which version you were last using? It would be great if you can recall that. Just download the version that you were using before you upgraded,

from here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

Install it and take a back-up of your bookmarks by exporting it to html files. OR even simple way is to open Internet explorer and import bookmarks from another browser (check if that helps).

After you get the back-up. Uninstall the older version again. Install a newer version of firefox and while installing import the bookmarks from html file or from other browser (wherever you have back up).

Tell me if it works.

Thanks a ton for trying to help me resolve this issue. Question for you. I remember there was a way to reset your computer back to a known date that you knew it functioned properly but I can't remember how to do that. Secondly how do I find out what version of Firefox that I have now?

OK it says I have version 27.0. it was updated on Feb 14th. The older version I had was 26.0. I went to

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

to try to upload 26.0 and I went to 26.0 file and clicked on it then it gave me numerous files to choose from? Which file uploads 26.0 out of that 26.0 tab?? So I assume if I upload 26.0 it will overide 27.0 or do I need to unistall 27.0? I'm a newb can ya tell LOL Thanks a ton for the help I think we are making headway!

Did you try my above posted suggestions?

What configuration do you prefer?

Do you want to see the menu bar like has been the default in Windows XP.

Do all toolbars still have all the default buttons?

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

Cor-el, The link

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox

That info is over my head??

Here is a screen shot. Notice the back button is not highlighted and also notice my bookmarks are empty. The funny thing is if I turn the computer off and reopen firefox sometimes i will have the orange firefox at the top and sometimes I won't. When I don't have the orange firefox box I can view my bookmarks BUT it still won't let me use the "BACK" Button.

That is why i think going back to Firefox 26.0 "MIGHT" Solve my problem since my puter was somehow updated on Feb 14th to 27.0. What do you think?

Here is a link to my screen shot below.

ddharmesh Patel, Sorry I'm really computer illiterate to what is what ie mozilla/windows. Didn't mean to cross that line. Do you feel like System restore would solve my problem? I'm certainly no expert just trying to use the best logic I have. Thanks you guys so much for hanging in there with me.

To all that have this problem. This worked (SO FAR ANYWAY). System restore back to a known date that you know everything worked right. Problem is solved. Thanks to all that helped. Much appreciated.

It's ok mike. I'm just like you with computers. It's just that I've started using it more often.
