My network connection freezes up

I leave Firefox open all the time, with several windows and a bunch of tabs in each. Recently (within the past couple weeks) I've encountered a problem where my network connection stops working. This applies not just to Firefox, but all programs. Even pinging my router by IP stops working:

   ]ping 192.168.0.1
Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
   Request timed out.
   Request timed out.
   Request timed out.
   Request timed out.
   Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
       Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

At first, I rebooted to solve the problem, but now I've discovered that simply exiting Firefox will restore the network. Then I can restart Firefox and everything works for a while longer. It seems to take around a week for the network to break again.

I've been using Firefox for years, and this is the first time I've encountered something like this.

Try to remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

I'm not running a personal firewall, just one on the router. And I can't even reach the router (or other PCs on the LAN) when this happens.

It's not just Mozilla applications that are having problems. It's all applications. But as soon as I exit Firefox, all other programs get their network connections restored. And when I start Firefox again, it works too.

I did find the How to troubleshoot TCP/IP connectivity with Windows XP article on that page you mentioned, but my network is working now, so there's nothing to troubleshoot. I'll try that next time it happens.

This is still going on, although now I've discovered that simply checking Work Offline in the File menu and then immediately unchecking it will restore my computer's network connection. That's less hassle than exiting Firefox completely, but I still don't understand how Firefox can prevent other programs from accessing the network.
