Firefox slows within one day of creating a new profile

I'm not entirely sure how to describe this problem but I'll do my best.

Recently upgraded to Firefox 10 (using Win XP), used FEBE to restore all my backed-up settings, extensions, preferences etc. All is fine and things run snappily. Loving it.

Then, a few days into use, something slows down. Memory usage isn't too high, and new pages load quickly, but Firefox seems to be jumpy itself. My symptoms are that scrolling is jumpy, no longer smooth, as if it's constantly redrawing the page. Also, every time I switch tabs, it quickly redraws the page rather than just showing it to me.

So I embarked on the following fixes, all to no effect:

  • Disabled all add-ons
  • Cleared caches, temporary files etc
  • Restarted the computer
  • Read several forums about deleting certain profile files and letting them be recreated.
  • Yesterday, methodically went through every profile file, deleting it and then starting FF to see if it fixed the problem.

The only thing that has worked has been creating a new profile. I have now done this about three times, and it's a pain with all my bookmarks, add-ons, and settings. I do use FEBE, which allows me to back up and restore each of these fairly quickly, and I did this yesterday. But within ONE HOUR of making a new profile, the slow redraw issue came back.

I'm at my wit's end as to what causes this issue since I've now tried removing all add-ons and then deleting each profile file one by one, and no add-on or file seems to be the cause by itself.

Did you check your security software to make sure that Firefox has full internet access?

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
