I have updated IE 8 and FF 3.6.9 installed - both are crashing every time I attempt to view Netflix "instant" playback shows.

In all cases - the error msg is the same, that the Silverlight plug-in has crashed, and when I click on the "click here" option at the bottom of the window, the "ModName" listed as having a problem is coreclr.dll

I'm running WinXP Pro SP3, fully updated. Which is why the system is using Silverlight instead of Flash, I guess.

I can confirm this Silverlight crash for FF3.6.11, IE9 beta and Chrome 6 and 7. It is now happening every time whenever I try to watch a movie on Netflix. I did everything I found in various forums, uninstalled and reinstalled Silverlight (now at v.4), still no joy. :(

uninstall microsoft silverlight then go back to netflix, watch an instant movie or tv show and netflix will prompt you to install the silverlight plugin, install it and it should work properly again, did for me

Clear your cache in Mozilla. Chrome has the same problem. I think my DDR3 has something to do with it. BTW: Firefox is the best at not having the crash, and- I'm supprized, IE- is the most prevalent with this crash. Good luck.

Thanks! Uninstalling and then reinstalling Silverlight was the trick. I was unable to use attachments on Hotmail or watch Netflix, but now both work.

While you read this keep in mind that I talked to Netflix who directed me to a Microsoft help number. They were absolutely useless.

After trying every combination of uninstalling, reinstalling etc. here is what worked for me:

Uninstall Silverlight, Firefox and IE9 (if you are using IE9). Silverlight and Firefox can be uninstalled from the Control Panel found under the the Start Menu. Once you are in the Control Panel click the Programs and Features button, select Silverlight and Firefox and then uninstall.

Uninstalling IE9 is not the same as uninstalling IE8. Do this:

Press that stupid little windows button + R at the same time. The windows button is the one that sits right next the Ctrl button and then paste in the following: 

C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{d450a8a1-9568-45c7-9c0e-b4f9fb4537bd} then press Enter.

wait for the Uninstall an update screen to load completely scroll through the list until you find Windows Internet Explorer 9 click once to highlight IE9, then click the Uninstall button (or right-click and uninstall) confirm that you want to uninstall (click yes) By uninstalling IE9, Windows will basically revert back to a fresh install of IE8. If you are using IE8, I would uninstall it and then reinstall it using another browser just so that it resets everything.

Note: After I uninstalled IE9, Firefox, and Silverlight I did a "clean your disks" using Norton Utilities, but I'm not sure if this is really necessary or not.

Ok, so now that you have a fresh IE8 installed, use IE8 to go to Netflix and try to watch a movie, at which point Netflix will prompt you to download Silverlight. Do it, and your movie should work.


Note: I think the whole problem here is that either Windows or the browser(s) hang on to traces of the Silverlight plugin even when you uninstall it, so you have to uninstall the browser(s) and Silverlight so that essentially everything gets reset.

It doesn't matter what I do I still get the plugin to crash. I've removed every trace of Internet Explorer in the registry. Download fresh versions of Mozilla and Silverlight. I uninstalled both of them and cleaned any lingering files. Reinstalled Mozilla, and Silverlight. Same error. No more movies for me.  :>/ See entry below.

I downloaded and ran Combofix I got from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com I downloaded it to my desktop and renamed it to moon.exe- That fixed my Google links from being redirected and I can now watch Netflix videos again.

As jr_sanford did, I ran Combofix and restarted my computer. Silverlight magically works now. Combofix is your best bet at fixing this. MS needs to address this issue because it's a pretty common problem with a complicated way of fixing it.

The crashes while watching Netflix have gotten worse. Oddly enough, Netflix on my desktop does not crash. It only crashes when using my laptop which is a Dell Inspiron 17 using Windows 7 Home Edition. I have contacted Netflix and they were no help at all. Everything on my computer is up to date. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Silverlight. I've cleaned up cache, and everything else I could think of to see if it helps. Since Silverlight crashes with all browsers used (Google, Firefox, IE) I am assuming it has something to do with it working correctly with a laptop. I have tried everything that everyone has recommended and it continues to crash. This week, Microsoft had a big update and the issue has gotten worse and happens about every 20 minutes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
