I have my Thunderbird 45.5.1 set to the classic view, with the contacts sidebar enabled. Using this version, I have never had a problem with the sidebar showing all of my email and RSS accounts. However, everytime I update past this version (more than 10 times), while it works for a day or two, eventually, I begin getting a blank contacts sidebar. While acting slower than usual, every other section is displayed ok. I have tried resetting the sidebar, refreshing, loading from a profile page, but nothing seems to display the contents of the contacts bar. When I uninstall the more recent version and reinstall 45.5.1, the sidebar correctly displays all of my information.

Thunderbird does not have a contact sidebar in the main window, only the compose window. But I do recall an add-on that could put it there.

After some seaching I found it, but it was only ever supposed to work up to V3 https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/contacts-sidebar/?src=ss

what add-ons do you have installed. Perhaps you address list is provided by one of those and it has not been updated by the author recently to work with versions after 45
