One of the changes listed in the Thunderbird 60 release notes is:

"When customizing the From: address, Thunderbird will now use this address for the SMTP "MAIL FROM" command. Previously the address configured in the identity was used. The preference mail.smtp.useSenderForSmtpMailFrom allows return to the previous behavior."

Could anyone help me understand what this means? How does it change sending mail from identities?

Thanks!

The change only applies to manually updating the From address when composing. It is a very specialized change that did not make it into the what is new document because very few users will use it.

Instead of reading the release notes, perhaps you would be better with the what is new document, it contain what were considered the "important" new things. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-thunderbird-60

Thanks Matt - does a manual change include manually selecting an identity to send from by way of the list in "from" or only when input using "customize from address"?
