Currently running Thunderbird 38.7.2 on my HP laptop running Windows 10. Email has been working fine forever until this morning when I attempted to access new emails, but Thunderbird doesn't recognize my password and provides this feedback message:

Sending of password for user [email protected] did not succeed. Mail server pop3.live.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password. [Error="ProxyNotAuthenticated" AuthResult=0 Proxy=DM2PR04MB621.namprd04.prod.outlook.com:1995:SSL]

I can access new emails in my Hotmail email account by logging into the internet directly (via www.hotmail.com) or via my iPad or iPhone using the same password that is not working when attempting to read new emails via Thunderbird. Suggestions?

A belated response, but an answer. See http://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2016/06/hotmail-proxy-errors.html

Thank you very much for the solution! I've had my hotmail account for over 10 years and couldn't figure out why it just stopped working. I was on the verge of scrapping the account, so your solution was just in the nick of time! Thanks again!!
