Google Maps Live Traffic appears briefly then disappears (not in Safe Mode, but even with all add-ons disabled)

I've had this problem in Firefox for some time: Live traffic shows for a few seconds, then disappears. It will reappear if I refresh the page, but not if I move the location or zoom in or out. If I restart Firefox with all add-ons disabled, I do not have this issue.

The obvious next step is to selectively disable add-ons until I find the culprit. But I disabled every single add-on, and restarted Firefox: the problem persists! So there must be a difference between starting Firefox in Safe Mode vs. disabling all extensions. Firefox states "Safe Mode is a special Firefox mode that can be used to troubleshoot and fix problems. Safe Mode temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes) that might be causing problems." But I use the Standard Theme and turning Hardware Acceleration off does not solve the problem. Any ideas?

This is on a Dell E5410 laptop with 8GB RAM running Windows 7 Enterprise.

Here are the add-ons I use, but I'm guessing that it's a plug-in issue instead. Any recommendations how best to diagnose?

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Then restart the browser. Are there any problems?

If you use extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via *"3-bar" menu button > Exit (Power button)

  • Windows: File > Exit
  • Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File > Quit

In my post, I mentioned "turning Hardware Acceleration off does not solve the problem".

Sorry if I wasn't more clear, but if I disable all extensions, I still have the problem. The problem only goes away if I start in Safe Mode. So there is something more subtle here that I don't understand. A plug-in, maybe? How to selectively disable these?

Are you using the default theme?

Yes, I am using the Default Theme. (Sorry for using the term "Standard Theme".)

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

As mentioned, I did try disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox. It did not solve the issue. Only Safe Mode has solved the issue so far.

All Crash Reports This application has not been configured to display crash reports.

You must turn on Enable Crash Reports. Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar. Select Data Choices.

user.js Preferences Your profile folder contains a user.js file, which includes preferences that were not created by Firefox.

Rename the user.js file by adding .old to it.. Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.

How are Crash Reports relevant to this issue? Firefox isn't crashing.

If it does crash, this will leave a record that we can check out. Did you take care of the user.js file?

There is no user.js file. Instead, there is a prefs.js file which I am reluctant to rename as my preferences are synchronized across multiple devices. Thanks for the help, but I prefer a different route if possible.

After several months and different versions of Firefox, I just noticed that I do not have this problem now, using Firefox 44.0.2. I'm using the same add-ons (and added Firebug). I hope this lasts! Thanks for the help (I'm not sure that "the big guys" helped out, though).
