After updating from Firefox ESR v24.8.1 to v31.20 double click select all does not work in a search area after going back or searching again with the same input. It happens before clicking search icon and searching for something else double click select all does not work except it works for one word that's all. This issue is with all new Firefox ESR and None ESR I have tried. Also the issue is on all web sites like www.softpedia.com for example.

I'm not sure what you mean by "a search area"... Is it any text input control on a form, or something special/custom on one or more particular websites?

Generally speaking, on Windows, double-click will select a word and triple-click will select a paragraph (or in a one-line form control, the entire control contents). I'm not sure why that would have been different in 24-ESR but maybe it's a mouse driver compatibility change?

This is what I mean see image attached, after I have typed "ashampoo burning studio free" and search for it, then I go back in history by clicking go back one page to search for different software in Latest ESR double click does not select all text but just one word. Mouse drives have nothing to do with Firefox at all. It a bug in Firefox. I have tried on multiple PC same issue.

If you still did not get me then follow my steps. Step 1. Open Firefox Step 2. Type: http://www.softpedia.com/ Step 3. In softpedia web site use its own search engine Step 4. Type the following: "ashampoo burning studio free" and press enter. Step 5. Go back one page- by pressing back icon in the web browser. Step 6. You will see again "ashampoo burning studio free" in the search area double click it first time it will select all but after form history shows up at a bottom its stops working for selecting all with double click. Step 7. Open new tab then go back to the same tab again and double click does not work again.

What you are describing seems normal to me: double-click selects a word, triple-click selects a paragraph. Microsoft says:

For some types of selectable objects, each click expands the effect of the click. For example, single-clicking in a text box sets the input location, double-clicking selects a word, and triple-clicking selects a sentence or paragraph.

This is not normal, it works only one time then after you open new tab its stop working correctly, how is this normal. How you even used Firefox ESR v24.8.1. Try before telling me its normal, this is obvious bug in new Firefox; Internet explore and Google chrome obviously don't have this kind of issues with a simple mouse interactions, I just can't believe you would say that its normal. For normal user, who only, one's in a while does web searching in the Website this bug will not be a problem or they will never notice it. But for people who use web searching in the website around 150 times a day this becomes an issue. The problem is one's form at a bottom of the search is displayed double click select all does not function at all but only one word get selected not normal. TEST it your self with v24.8.1 then check it again with new Firefox.

And if you say "Microsoft says:...." then triple clicking should be working but nether works on new version of ESR Firefox and just so you know Microsoft internet explore works with double click select all when one word is selected or triple click if nothing is selected but it works.

Oh one more thing if it difficult for you to see the issue. Do this, type anything with multiple words in softpedia search box. Have a form of the search box activated by having history of same text searched previously. After form gets activated then do the testing of double click or triple click or more you will not get all the text selected because of all the bugs in Firefox. But old Firefox v24.8.1 works correctly see for your self.

I am testing in Firefox 33, IE11, and the current release of Chrome on Windows 7; I cannot switch to ESR 24.x. I get the single/double/triple click behavior I described in all three of those browsers, which matches the platform convention for Windows. So that's why I say it is normal.

If you are used to a different behavior, I can think of a few possible explanations:

  • A settings change in the Mouse control panel or other system-level change
  • A script in the affected sites that detects a double-click and select everything in the control. (I do not see that happening on Softpedia in my browsers.)
  • A Firefox add-on that works differently than before.
  • A bug fix to Firefox between version 24 and 31.

Reading your description again, I noticed this part:

Microsoft internet explore works with double click select all when one word is selected or triple click if nothing is selected but it works.

For me, if I double-click an already selected word in IE11, I end up with nothing selected. However, I noticed IE11 allows a longer delay before the third click. In other words, in IE11 I can double-click a word, then if I quickly click it again, IE will behave as though I triple-clicked. Firefox doesn't allow as long as pause before the third click as IE11 does; the clicks need to be quite closer together.

Toward the end you mentioned history, I assume form history. I do not use that feature, but when it turn it on, it adds an extra step if I interact with the drop-down. If I work with the text in the search box, it continues to behave normally.

It looks like it is hopeless taking to you. You say its normal and that's it. You did not even try Firefox v24.8.1. why even bother taking about been normal when you even have not tested it on Firefox v24.8.1.

So lets do this; is their an option in "about:config" to return the way it functioned previously on all Firefox prier Firefox v24.8.1. If you know tell me.

If not then tell me do you have connections with Firefox programers and have them check this bug out them self.

One more thing if you don't know were to get Firefox v24.8.1. Use this link from firefox: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/24.8.1esr/win32/en-US/

Also about form history yes that what I was taking about one's it gets activated double click to select all does not function anymore which is a bug in Firefox. And don't blame windows or add-on's or anything else like setting because the issue is with Firefox which has not been tested properly before releasing to the public. And also its not just softpedia but all the web sites that use search the same way as softpedia.

The proper way of behaving is, its works with form history and without it same way.

Plus, I am not the only one who reported this issue check the "Submitted Feedback" you will see dozen of people complain about this bug.

I investigated this further based on what I assume is your latest feedback:

Select all with double click or triple click is not working after I select text from form at a bottom of the search box. https://input.mozilla.org/dashboard/r.../4669132

I got some inconsistent results in this scenario on Softpedia: a triple-click sometimes behaved strangely. In most cases, a triple-click selected the entire contents of the control, but in some cases it only selected the word I triple-clicked and closed the autosuggest drop-down list (similar to double-click followed by the Esc key). However, after reloading the page I could not replicate the wrong behavior.

Note: I usually disable form autocomplete, so my form history is very small. Having a large form history might contribute to the problem since it takes time to match the wording in the form field with suggestions. This isn't something I can test.

Since you believe this is a bug, you should file it in the bug tracking system here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

I checked the feedbacks during the past 90 days that contained either double or triple but I only found two others related to clicking in a form field:

If there were others you wanted to reference, grab the Permalink for posting.

As a footnote, I noticed that the word "Search" to the left of the search box on Softpedia has a script attached that selects the entire contents of the search box. Might be useful to you as a workaround.
