Firefox has upgraded to version 33 and will no longer work at all. I open the browser and get a black screen and a dialogue box headed 'Authorisation Required'

The black screen has an empty dialogue box with 'Authorisation Required' as its header. Using Windows 7 machine. Can't follow your troubleshooting routine as I cannot open Firefox at all!

based on what i have heard from other affected users i'm going to guess that you might have an embedded intel hd3000 graphics card on your system and outdated drivers for it. if this is the case, please perform an update of the driver: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764

hello SteveHartley, maybe that's an issue with hardware acceleration - first please try updating your graphics driver, or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, start firefox into safemode by pressing the shift key while the application is launching & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > general (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).
