Jumplist cache

Recently, I stumbled into a directory containing several hundred icon files. Obviously, this directory belongs to Firefox:

C:\.....\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ikq6zo8j.default\jumpListCache

My privacy settings are: "Clear history when Firefox closes" with all checkboxes ticked.

I checked everything but these icons don't go away. Searched the internet regarding this problem. Nothing. Searched Firefox Addons. Nothing.

Now if we talk about privacy and take it serious, there MUST be a setting to clear this directory after exiting Firefox. Since this seems to be favicons, everyone can find these icons and easily reconstruct all the sites accessed by the user.

I'm appalled by this behaviour, as it's a massive privacy violation. What's the use of clearing the history, when those icons aren't deleted?

Someone has filed a bug report about that folder: 724423 – jumpListCache folder containing favicons is not being cleared and storing multitudes of duplicate images. There's no reason to add a "me too" or "I'm outraged" comment on Bugzilla, that just pushes developers to stop paying attention. However, if you register on the site you can add your vote to the 5 existing votes for having it fixed.

As a short term workaround you can create a deljumpcache.bat file to erase the files and then schedule that as a Windows Task for some convenient time.

The batch file only needs two lines (it wraps here due to the length, but it's really only two lines):

cd %localappdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ikq6zo8j.default\jumpListCache del /q *.*

When testing this, I noticed that I only had about 8 files in my folder in my oldest profile migrated from before Firefox 1, so I probably have turned off something related to this feature.

Same thing here.

Dear Jefferson Scher, thanks for your reply to my post from 7/27/12. Maybe my diction was inappropriate, but I'm from Germany and do not always choose the right words. Please excuse my phrasing.

After a couple of releases (my comment was about 13.0 and we're at 18.0 in the meantime) it seems to me that no one is caring about that. Following your suggestion, I went to 724423 (then and now) and couldn't find any progress.

Having been a programmer myself, I think that this one should be easy to solve. Maybe it just has been forgotten?

Please advise. Thanks in advance, Martin

Hi Knorpel, on my main profile I currently only have 9 icons in that folder. They appear to be the most frequently visited sites, as none are recent. I probably need to retest with a new profile that doesn't have so much history.

Anyway, no new information on my end about this issue.
