Thunderbird 91.4.1 authentication problems with gmail accounts
Yesterday, Thunderbird was automatically updated to 91.4.1 on my Windows 10 laptop. Now my gmail accounts fail to authorize. When I start Thunderbird, a splash screen appears "Secure connection failed". The title bar on the splash screen says "Enter credentials for [email protected] on imap.gmail.com" (xxxxx represents my username). There is nowhere to enter credentials as far as I can see. I know for sure that the password I used was correct as I just signed in to gmail using a browser. Please help!

Screen 13: Try changing the Authentication methods to OAuth2, as I believe they are supposed to be, and click Re-test.
Screen 14: Click Done and this splash screen appears...
I'm stuck. I'm wondering if this new release was tested by the dev team with a gmail account.

It certainly works fine here. When the problem also shows up in a new profile, then it may be a more general problem, but specific to your environment though. Can you try to re-install Thunderbird? I have no idea whether this helps, it's just a try. Download the full installer from https://www.thunderbird.net/
Can you login to your Gmail account via web browser?
I am able to sign in to Gmail via Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge using both of my Gmail accounts. I will attempt to re-install Thunderbird in the next couple of days. Thanks
ok I uninstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird 91.4.1 but authentication errors continued. I removed the gmail account (the only account) and then added it back again. I created the app password using Google and used this as my gmail password to connect to gmail. Success! BUT I exited from Thunderbird, let it 'rest' for a couple of minutes and restarted it. I got authentication errors again.
I think I've now sorted out most of it as follows: Incoming Server Hostname: imap.gmail.com Port: 993 SSL: SSL/TLS Authentication: Normal Password Outgoing Server Hostname: smtp.gmail.com Port: 465 SSL: SSL/TLS Authentication: Normal Password
HOWEVER, every time I restart Thunderbird I see this: Secure connection failed
This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server. If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.
Or you can add an exception…
The Error Console looks strange:

Authentication: Normal Password
If you use 'Normal Password' authentication you have to create an app password. The Google preferred method is OAuth2 authentication, this requires the use of the main account password. None of that is related to your problem though. It already fails to establish the TLS session, and doesn't even get to the point to authenticate.
Or you can add an exception…
Try to click on that 'add an exception' link, but don't actually create an exception. Can you post a screenshot of the window you get after clicking that link?
One more thing you can try: Try to start Windows 10 in safe mode with networking enabled.
Does the problem go away? Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software. This is a troubleshooting step, not a solution.
Muudetud
Thanks - I will try this over the weekend. When I click on the 'add an exception' link, nothing happens :-(

... can you give me the correct steps for this. I have tried several times, but I just can't get it to work.
I restarted Thunderbird with Windows in Safe Mode (with Networking). Same problem. Here is the Error Console output...

Problem not completely resolved. Although I can read and send emails, I am still seeing the 'security' message when I fire up Thunderbird. Also, many emails with embedded graphics/pictures etc. are not rendered and have no option to do so. I think this may have something to do with not having oAuth2 enabled (I have not found a way of successfully enabling it).
Problem not completely resolved.
So you initially had a certificate related problem, and you could neither send nor receive messages.
After starting Windows in safe mode, you said "Same problem.".
And now you're saying you can send and receive messages. Please explain what you did, and what happened.
Also, what is your anti-virus software?
I am using Windows Defender for virus protection.
Please review my entries for 1/14/2022 onward for the steps that I took.
Did you ever get this resolved? I'm having essentially the same problem. Precipitated when I took Google's advice, and enabled two-factor authentication and deleted the application password that I had been using. Set up with OAth2. Since then no setting works, I get the login message, enter my gmail password, get the challenge to go to my phone and respond, do so, click "I have responded" and get the page showing me the things tbird wants to do (deal with mail, manage calendar and access address book, then nothing. No mail is downloaded. I even uninstalled and reinstalled. I do not plan to go back to regular password access as Google plans to withdraw that entirely in about a month. I may have to go to (ugh) Outlook.
I now am accessing my gmail using Brave. Note I use Avast's security suite. I've verified it is permitting Internet access to Tbird.

Hey Fire2, No, I was never able to resolve this myself, but I was able to use most of the functionality of TBird. However, I often found that emails with embedded jpegs would not render. I also had an error message every time I started Tbird (I forget the wording). Then, a few days ago, along came version 91.8.0 auto-update and voila! Everything resolved!
In the 'Firewall', is 'Thunderbird' set up as an allowed program? It is possible the Firewall thinks the TB update is a new program. Exit Thunderbird Access Firewall and set up Thunderbird as an allowed app/program.
Select the 'Start' menu, type 'Allow an app through Windows Firewall', and select it from the list of results.
Select 'Change settings'. You might be asked for an administrator password or to confirm your choice.
To add an app, select the check box next to the app, or select Allow another app and enter the path for the app and then select OK.

Start Thunderbird
Check to see cookies are enabled.
Thunderbird must have cookies enabled.
- Menu app icon > Preferences
- Select 'Privacy & Security'
- Under 'Web content'
- Select 'Accept cookies from sites'
Create imap account: Menu app icon > New > existing mail account
- Enter Name, full gmail email address, normal password- same one you use to access webmail
- select to remember passwords
- Click on 'Continue'
It should find settings because Thunderbird does know about gmail imap. But these are the settings you need: Incoming:
- Server name: imap.gmail.com
- Port: 993
- Connection SEcurity: SSL/TLS
- Authentication Method: OAuth2
- User name is full gmail email address
SMTP - Outgoing
- Server name: smtp.gmail.com
- Port: 465
- Connection SEcurity: SSL/TLS
- Authentication Method: OAuth2
- User name is full gmail email address
Did it work after going through all the checks ?
Please note: You cannot use 2 factor authentication and app generated password - switch it off.
Latest updates with gmail/google and password requirements mean you need to use 'OAuth2' in Authentication Method. Cookies must be enabled for it to work. Use Normal Password and the OAuth settings regardless of whether you use POP or IMAP. If you manually change these settings in an account previously set up, then restart Thunderbird after making the changes. Then you will get a pop up by gmail asking to confirm Password and select to allow Thunderbird access to gmail account.
OAuth2 token is then stored in Thunderbird, which Thunderbird will use from then onwards to access account.
