. Whenever you get a message / popup that software / files need to be updated;

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE PROVIDED LINKS

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Anytime you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the website of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to https://www.mozilla.org {web link}

You can report such a site at; Google Report Phishing Page {web link} which is the same when done while on site by going to Help > Report Web Forgery

For over a year, an epidemic of Fake Update Notices have been popping up all over the place. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/forum-response-i-found-fake-firefox-update

Are you talking about an update for Windows or Firefox?

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do Not remove the profiles folder.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them. Do not rename the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

If you crashed Firefox through shutting down Windows, Firefox will try to restore your previous session. You can hide your Firefox session history so that it can't restore the problem page at startup. (But keep the files for future reference.)

Copy the following, then paste it into the Windows 7 start menu search box and press Enter to open this path in Windows Explorer:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

In that Profiles folder, you usually see one semi-randomly-named profile folder, for example:

abcd1234.default

If you have one folder, click into it. If there are multiple folders, we'll repeat the following steps for each one.

In the profile folder, look for the following:

  • sessionstore-backups folder ==> rename this to OLDsessions
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 file ==> if you find this -- it's usually not there if Firefox was not shut down normally -- rename it to BADsessionstore.jsonlz4
  • sessionstore.bak file ==> if you find this, it's probably ancient, just delete it

After this, when you start Firefox up, it should just show your home page.

So far so good?

If you want to extract a list of open windows/tabs from any of your session history files later, you can use this tool on my website:
