I have reinstalled adobe flash; can't find it listed in my programs or any other place. Still have no sound with any videos on any web sites.

Flash would be listed on Firefox's Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, look for "Shockwave Flash" and make sure its permission is either "Always Activate" or "Ask to Activate".

When you are playing a video, does Firefox display a little speaker icon on the tab? This indicates that Firefox believes it is sending audio. If the speaker has a slash through it, that indicates Firefox believes the audio from that tab is muted. To change the mute status you can click the icon or using the Ctrl+m keyboard shortcut.

The icon doesn't tell you whether the video is playing through the Flash plugin or the built-in HTML5 media player. You may be able to tell from the Volume Mixer. It should show some movement on the sending application, whether it's Firefox or Flash.

Users occasionally report problems with headsets, or more specifically, Firefox sending audio to a headset rather than their speakers. I can't recall the circumstances, but it may involves Firefox not realizing that your output device has changed. Plugging the headset back in and then unplugging it again might help. It also might crash Firefox...

The speaker tab is open. It won't play through either the headphones or the speakers. I don't have this problem with Edge so I know it must be firefox.

I really like your browser much better than the others and want to use it.

I'm not sure what you mean by this --

The speaker tab is open.

Do pure audio players put out sound or are those similarly silent? You can use this test page as an example:

I've attached a screenshot for reference.

None of them worked for me

Just to clarify what that means: You clicked the play button, the bar started moving, no sound came out of the speakers.

Did the speaker icon appear on the tab, indicating that Firefox was generating audio from the page?

Did the volume mixer show any activity on the Firefox slider?

Could you also make sure the little blue speaker icon at the bottom of the various sliders on the volume mixer does not show a muted symbol (clicking the icon switches back and forth between muted and not muted)?

If the Firefox slider shows activity but the output device slider (usually the first column) doesn't show any activity, is there a drop-down in that column to check whether audio is going to any other device?

The only movement on the control mixer is the slide that says firefox. The rest of them seem to be mute. The mute is off so I should be getting sound. I plugged in my head set and tried sound that way, again no sound, either from the head set or the speakers when the headset is not plugged in. I have nothing else going on with any other programs.

Thank you for checking that. I can't imagine where that sound output is going. But the bigger issue is that I don't know how to change it.

My audio setup is very basic, but in searching around on this problem I noticed that some users have a lot of different playback devices, and an app may be sending output to the wrong one. Could you check this post (Spotify forums) to see whether you can find Firefox's audio there?
