do you have a simple fix

I don't know how you'd expect a simple fix for a problem which has not been understood yet.

i am not computer savy

If you're having problems to follow the instructions given below consider hiring a computer professional to help.

Thunderbird 'Not responding' problems are often caused by anti-virus software. The idea is to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled, which disables anti-virus software. This will help to determine, whether your anti-virus software is causing the problem.

Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

- Win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem go away?

bmw63,

Try delete the Thunderbird program directory (NOT your profile data), and reinstall from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ --- one of the several ideas you can try at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems

Let us know what works??
