clicking on a link or a bookmark will not open a new tab, it will open on the tab I'm already on. Have already tried Tools/options/tabs/ check Open new windows in new tab instead. It doesn't work.

Hi, Firefox doesn't. You need to right click > Open link in New Tab. Or, click the mouse wheel. Or, hold down Ctrl when you left click.

There are also Add-ons such as Tab Mix Plus, or for bookmarks only, try Open Bookmarks in New Tab.

Hope that helps.

Just noticed that it does open a new tab when clicking on a url in a thunderbird email.

Huh? It has for years! Maybe it's an add on I lost?

Tried Tab Mix Plus, it works but looks odd, wish I could recover the old add on I was using, maybe it doesn't work for 36?
