Thunderbird release 31.4.0, windows 8.1

I have configured Thunderbird Chat to connect to my corporate Google mail account. At first it didn't connect, showing "Error: The server closed the connection" on every attempt. Then it started working, and for a few days no problem. Now it has stopped working again, with that same message. I do not believe that anything has changed on the PC I'm using, and Google Talk works if I log on to their gmail site. But I really don't want to do that, it is much more convenient to have the messages appear in Thunderbird. I am not concerned about the IMAP connection, just the Chat interface.

Can anyone confirm that using Thunderbird as a Google Talk client really does work, reliably? Or doesn't? Or are there any suggestions?

Thankyou for any insight.
