How and from where did you download Thunderbird on your iPad? As far as I know Thunderbird Mobile only runs on Android smartphones.

Thunderbird is currently only available for desktop as in Windows, macOS and Linux and a mobile version for Android.

If you downloaded a Thunderbird .dmg file then that will not work as it is for macOS and not iOS/iPadOS.
