Connection to server outlook.office365.com was reset
I have been using thunderbird for a few years now and a few times it has decided to play up and says Connection to server outlook.office365.com was reset. For this reasn I have downloaded a fresh install and after putting in the email accounts for both my hotmail.com and gmail.com, it worked once. The next time, I got the same error. I don’t know why it says outlook.office365.com, or why it insists on configuring to it. My husband uses hotmail and gmail and his is (as we both use pop server on hotmail) pop-mail.outlook.com. We tried to configure mine the same as his, but it come up with a different error. If I search Google for “Connection to server outlook.office365.com was reset” I only get office related info.
I hope the community can help to solve this.
Best regards,
PS. I can’t create account here (not able to verify) so it’s posted on my husband’s account.

It happens with electronics, sometimes they just need a restart to get them working right again. Happens to us humans too.

Thunderbird automatically uses outlook.office365.com during the account setup wizard, unless you manually specify the other settings.

Many thanks for your reply. Can you please explain the procedure? Do I have to delete the account and then start again or can I force the one I got manually somehow? Kind regards,
Hotmail/outlook.com and gmail accounts should work, as long as the settings are correct and other factors are satisfied. For Hotmail, first enable POP on the outlook.com site, then use these settings: incoming POP or IMAP server outlook.office365.com on port 995 (POP) or 993 (IMAP), SSL/TLS, authentication = normal password, User Name = email address; outgoing smtp.office365.com on port 587, STARTTLS, authentication = normal password, User Name = email address.
If you have two-step verification on the account, use an app password in place of the account password. In case a security/AV app is interfering with the account setup, disable email scanning or add the TB profile folder as an exception.
If you are connecting through a VPN, it may be (probably is) interfering with TB.

Thank you again. That is exactly how it looks in server settings and smtp settings. This morning it still wasn’t working. Last night I read a 3 year old post, that suggested rebooting the router, so while having breakfast, I did just that. After that it worked the first time then back to the error. Rebooted laptop and it has been working ever since. I’ve no idea what difference the router reboot has made but at least so far for today I have been able to get my emails. I’d like to thank you again for your time and effort in helping me.
Kind regards,

You can say that again. This morning, it stopped working. Did a cold reboot and that worked for 2 hrs and stopped again and reboot don’t bring it back. What we noticed that on my laptop there is 3 folders in Profiles and in the other laptop there is only one. I wonder if the problem lies there. I’m out of ideas. Regards,
PS. We have successfully identified the profile being used and deleted the other 2. Also deleted all .msf files from accounts (imap and pop) and while they were replaced on restarting TB it worked again. Unfortunately the next click on Get Messages resulted in the Connection to server outlook.office365.com was reset error.
