TB suddenly stopped allowing email attachments on both my and my wife's computers. She has a dell latitude. When you click on attachment the screen freezes, the little circle goes round but TB does not respond unless you shut it down and restart. If you try to attach again, same thing happens.

Do you have a home network? Remote storage on a SAN or NAS device? Have you tried With your anti virus disabled?

There is no home network, no remote storage device, and my Trend Micro has worked well with the TB for years. This just started with both of our computers. Any help out there?

That is no reason it can not be the issue now. Just like saying the motor in your car has given no trouble for years. That does not mean it will not stop working correctly on the way to the shop.

See here https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#My_Problem_Cannot_be_Caused_by_Antivirus You are not the only one to say what you are saying. You are also not the only one to be told that is a false assumption to make. Anti virus is a horrible thing that makes all sorts of problems for Mail clients, They do appear to test their products with Micrisift products, but beyond that anti virus software is little better than berta. Every day they tinker with the product and send out a patch. What is does or does not do is completely opaque. Unless you actually compare before and after you have no idea even what changed, let alone what the change does! All because we have been trained to trust folk that are quite honestly not trustworthy. That Wiki page should make that fairly clear.

So can we move on with some real diagnostic processes instead of being in denial?

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
