I have been running Firefox 42. Suddenly today I opened it up and the resolution is horrible. Pics, fonts, pages, etc. all are fuzzy. Resolution in all other browsers and rest of the computer operations are all high quality. I upgraded to the newest Firefox and no better.

Well I don't know what happened, but it has corrected itself now. I read your post last night and was going to do it today. I got on the computer this morning and resolution was still poor but I had to go. I turned the computer off, came home tonight, turned it on, and it was corrected. I have no idea what happened and looking at the history of both Firefox and Windows, cannot see any event that occurred between last night and tonight. As of now it is resolved, but it is unfortunate I was not able to determine why. Thanks for the help!

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Try to set layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to 1.0 (default is -1) on the about:config page. If necessary adjust its value in 0.1 or 0.05 steps (1.1 or 0.9) until icons or text looks right. Modifying layout.css.devPixelsPerPx acts as a global zoom and affects the user interface and web pages and you may have to adjust the appearance of web pages.

You can look at the Default FullZoom Level or NoSquint extension to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages.

Turning off hardware acceleration did not work. Graphics driver is fully updated. The poor resolution is only occurring in Firefox and applies to everything from the menu bar, bookmarks, webpage font and pics. There are no resolution problems on any other browser or computer application, only Firefox.

Yesterday everything was fine. Today after turning on the computer it is not. We are talking 768x quality on a 3840x screen. It is terrible, especially when looking at pics. Bad enough that I'm posting my first question here ever and bad enough that if it is not fixed will force me to dump Firefox.

You can open the Properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and check the "Compatibility" tab. Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

Did you try to modify layout.css.devPixelsPerPx?

About.config setting didn't work. Changed it many times from -5.0 in .05 increments all the way to +5.0 and it made no effect at all in any way. Just checked the compatibility settings and they are all off. Please note, it is not just the fonts or icons. Viewing photographs in Flickr is just as bad.

Try to uninstall and reinstall Firefox.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then create a new profile.
