An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: relay not permitted. Please check the message recipient *** and try again.

My Thunderbird email account is set up for freecycle.org. If I try to send emails to any other domain, ie gmail or yahoo, I get the above message.

Sounds to me like you have not got a password authentication set up sdo your mail is falling into an open relay situation.

Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings >outgoing server (SMTP) and check you account has authentication.

Under Tools/Account Settings/accountname/Outgoing Server (SMTP), try these settings:

outgoing server: mail.freecycle.org port: 465 Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication: normal password User Name: [email protected]

If those don't work, try STARTTLS security on port 587 (other settings the same). Disable anti-virus scanning of outgoing mail, if it's on.
