I created 1 stationary item but every email I created used that stationary whether I wanted it to or not. It looks like it could be a useful feature but I cannot find a good description of how to use stationary.

Is there a detailed explanation anywhere to be found?

Do you mean the Stationery add-on?

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/stationery/

I suspect its original intent being to support existing stationery designed for Outlook Express meant that it didn't need any instructions. ;-)

Mine is set to offer the various templates when you start a new message. Or a right-click in the body a message offers a list of available stationery templates, one of which is "No stationery".

But you're right in that it offers the last used template by default.

I have gleaned some useful tidbits about it from the author's page at the mozilla add-ons site, such as the _Athcaret which can be used to set the insertion point, and the signature placeholder to control how/where a signature can appear, using a standalone signature rather than one "hard coded" in to the template itself.
