Hi,

It's been a couple of weeks since I've had this problem, and I can't seem to solve it. Firefox automatically updated to version 24 and ever since, when I open a new tab, either with Ctrl+t or by pressing the + sign, there is no focus of the cursor, nowhere, while before, the focus was in the address bar. I want to have that back, since it is extremely annoying to always have to move my mouse cursor to the address bar and click it. I haven't changed anything, tried reinstalling, tried the costum new tab add-on, but nothing works. So if anyone here is able to help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there.
A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.
Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Firefox SafeMode

  • You can open the Firefox 15.0+ SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

Or it might be caused by Hardware Acceleration.

When you figure out what is causing that, please let us know. It might help other user's who have that problem.

What is the setting of the about:newtab page?

You can check the browser.newtab.url pref(s) on the about:config page.

Hi,

I've tried the safe mode, but this doesn't change a thing. As for the about:config settigs for the newtab, it gives the following:

browser.newtab.url status = standard type = string value = about:newtab

Hope this is everything you need?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, that happens with the about:newtab page. You can press the F6 key to set focus to the location bar.

You can change the browser.newtab.url pref to about:blank to get an empty page with the cursor in the location bar.

I've changed the browser.newtab.url to the about:blank, but this changes nothing. When opening a new tab, I get a blank page, but there is still no cursor focus nowhere. I've also tried to re-initialize firefox (in the help part), and this made it work for half a day suddenly, but afterwards, there still was no cursor focus again.

Did you install extension in the new profile that got created with the reset?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

just download and install "custome new tab" add-ons for firefox, then: Firefox > Add-ons > Extensions > untick "Preload this Page"
